If you're looking at this guide that means you want free money, and dont we all. But you do have to work for it. How? By going through rolls of coins at your local banks. Lets start with who I am and how I got hooked on this new, small trend. I'm a 16 year old boy living in Ohio who has been collecting coins since the 1st grade. I started by collecting half dollars, and focused all my attention on them. I subscribed to CoinWorld (a great publication which every serious collector should have or have Numismatic News) and always just searched for half dollar articles. My dad read the entire magazine, and about four years ago, saw Bill O' Rourke's Found In Rolls article. It was about how he had went to a local bank around where he lives and how he found silver quarters. Whenever we went to a bank from then on, we would get maybe $50 in quarters. After going through about $1000-$2000 in hand wrapped quarters and only finding 1 1964 Washington quarter, we dropped the entire subject and forgot about it. A year later, it started up again, but this time with half dollars. We went around to different banks getting them (usually they only had about $20 worth) and searched through them in the car. We couldn't find anything and were about to go home when my dad pulled up to an intersection and I saw a bank we hadn't been to. I begged my dad to give me one last shot, and he decided what the hell. We went in and asked, and the teller told us he ONLY had $200 dollars worth, and they were machine wrapped. My father and I looked at each other and said we'll take 'em. They put them in a box and we went to the car. These were wrapped tightly in paper, but you could see the two end halves. Since opening them was a mess and they would spew everywhere, I only looked at the top ones to see if there was anything special. The first roll I picked up and I was looking straight at a 1945 Walking Liberty Half. I showed my father and we were completely amazed, and we sure as hell went back to that bank and started getting more.
I now have been going through halves for 3 years, and am going through $3000 a week, and also go through all other denominations, except large dollars, which are very hard to find. Over the course of three years I have found some pretty crazy stuff:

July 24th, 2007- What a story i have today! While picking up $1000 in halves, we asked about loose, hand wrapped rolls. The teller had ten, seven with one wrapper and 3 with another. Going through them in the car because im a teen with no patience, the first roll of the 7 group was entirely 40% silver! In all the 7 first rolls turned out 114 40%'s, and the other three rolls turned out 1, for and grand total of 115 40% out of 200 coins total. Then, going through the machine wrapped pieces, several 40%'s, and 1942 walker, and a 1998 Proof turned up.
July 28th, 2007- 2 boxes of halves got 2 40% and a 1987, a box of nickels got 6 buffalo (5 were dateless, the other was a 1930 in XF) and a wartime. A box of pennies had around 15 wheats.
July 31st, 2007- 4 boxes of halves had nothing! a box of nickels had 3 wartime and two 1939's, and a box of pennies had 1 dime, one canadian clipped planchet cent, and about 30 wheats, including a 1909 no VDB in Fine.

August 14, 2007- 4 boxes of halves- 2 1964's, 7 40%, 7 proofs (1987, 1993, 1994, 1999, 1972, 1996, 1986) and two enameled 2007 halves. 2 boxes of nickels had a dateless buffalo, a 1989 proof, a singapore 20 cent piece, a dime and a penny.
August 16th, 2007- A great batch of hand rolled pennies! $150 worth had over 60 wheats, 2 King Georges, 11 dimes, a Jamaican dime, a rolled thick cent, some BU canadians from the 60's, an 1889 Indian in XF, and the finale... my third 1984 Double Ear!! It grades a nice 63 red, and just popped out of the roll! I estimate i should be able to part with it for $150.
August 29, 2007- I havent written in a while because of school starting up, and the fact that i havent really found anything that noteworthy. some wheats and king georges, a couple dimes, a partial collar nickel, and a 1983 cent that weighs 2.72 grams instead of the usual 2.5 are the most exciting things ive gotten in these 2 weeks.
August 30, 2007- although i didnt look through any rolls today, a trip to drop off a bag of pennies for a $50 bill made me money. A teller that looks for unusual things for me had a 1964 quarter and a 1969-D Kennedy, and i paid face value for them.
Sept. 5, 2007- nothing in $2000 halves, a box of nickels had 2 1939's and a 1990 proof. A box of pennies had 10 wheats, a 1972 proof (my first proof cent), a partial collar cent, and a plastic dime.
Sept. 9, 2007- $113 in pennies had 53 wheats, a 1907 Indian, a king george VI, a 2 euro cent coin from ireland, and a blank penny.
Sept 11, 2007- not a good day as there was nothing in a box of nickels, 5 wheats and a king george VI penny in a box of pennies, and in two boxes of halves there were 4 40% silver and 1 1964.
Sept 15, 2007- A coin show took place, and i unloaded many items. My two double ears i had left sold for a combined total of $225, and i traded most of my proof halves for a 1909-S Lincoln in Fine.
Sept 19, 2007- two boxes of halves had 3 1964s, 8 40%'s, and a proof. A box of nickels had a dateless buffalo and 3 wartime, and a box of pennies had 15 wheats. As for my dateless Buffalos, i bought Nic-A-Date to restore them and found a 1914-D!!! Its in Good, but the acid restored date makes it good details. still an amazing find!
Sept. 26, 2007- $1000 in halves got me 5 40% halves, a box of nickels got 4 wartime.
Oct. 2, 2007- 2 boxes of halves only had 5 40%. a box of nickels had 2 wartime and a 1929-D buffalo.
Oct 7, 2007- a box of pennies had over 100 wheats!
Oct. 9, 2007- two boxes of halves only had 3 40%s. A box of nickels had one wartime and a 1939-S. A box of pennies had 15 wheats and a 1921 George V canadian cent.
Oct 25, 2007- Haven't written in a while, so i thought nows a good time. Only things really worth mentioning is a 1943 zinc cent and a Gem 1964 Proof Jefferson.
Nov. 5, 2007- Found my first V Nickel under weird circumstances. It was in a roll of hand wrapped Half dollars! 1911 and the grade was good. The best part was that they simply added the nickel to the roll, so it was free. There was also a 1944 walker, a 1964, and 4 40% silvers in $50 worth of halves.
Nov. 15th, 2007- A box of nickels had a 1957 3 pence coin and a bahamas nickel.
Feb. 28, 2008 - Haven't written in a very long time, but got something very good. Box of nickels had a Buffalo, a bohemian nickel, and a 1943 wartime in XF. After checking this wartime, its a 1943/2!!! I will be submitting it to ANACS.
March 5th- 2 boxes of halves had 79 40%, not including 67 SMS, 68-S, and 69-S pieces. there were also 24 90% silver pieces, not including a 1964 D FS 101, and a 1964 FS-102. Both are choice BU
Some of the walkers are full BU, and the oldest walker i've found is a 1918. I have only one 1918, 3 1918-s, and 1 1918-D in VF which sold for $28.
The best part of it is definitely the knowledge and stories you hear (one dealer told me he cracked open a roll of pennies and out popped a $2.50 Coronet!), along with the looks on dealers faces when you tell them you found that Double Ear or 1918-d in a roll, and money is definitely a plus.
This has made me thousands of dollars and I highly encourage young and old collectors who need money or who need to fill that hole in their Whitman Albums to go out and get rolls. There are a couple rules though:
1. NEVER BRING THE COINS BACK TO THE SAME BANK! (GOLDEN RULE)
2. MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE TELLERS (THEY TELL YOU WHEN THEY GOT ODD THINGS, LIKE ONE TIME WHEN AN OLD WOMAN CAME IN AND HAD 2 ROLLS OF QUARTERS AND 4 ROLLS OF DIMES WHICH THE TELLER GAVE ME FOR FACE VALUE AND 75% OF THEM WERE SILVER AND THAT IS HOW I FOUND MY 1917-D MERCURY DIME. ALSO, ON MAY 11TH, 2007 A LOCAL TELLER GAVE ME A NICE ROLL OF WHEAT PENNIES, ALL OF WHICH WERE EITHER RED/RED BROWN OR FROM THE 1920'S.
3. WHEN THE HOLIDAY'S ROLL AROUND, PRESENTS DEFINITELY HELP. AFTER GETTING THOSE ROLLS, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T AROUND THE HOLIDAY'S, I GAVE THAT TELLER A BOX OF GODIVA CHOCOLATE AND A $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE. (DON'T WORRY, I STILL CAME OUT AHEAD!)
4. KNOWLEDGE IS KEY BEFORE YOU START. IF GOING THRU ANY OR ALL DENOMINATIONS I SUGGEST BOTH VOLUMES OF THE CHERRYPICKERS GUIDE TO RARE DIE VARIETIES. FOR HALVES I SUGGEST THE KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR BOOK BY JAMES WILES OR TREASURE HUNTING FRANKLIN AND KENNEDY HALF DOLLARS. EVEN IF YOU'RE JUST LOOKING FOR SILVER OR OLDER PIECES, THINGS SHOW UP (LIKE THOSE 3 1984 DOUBLE EARS, THE 1972 DDO'S, THE 43/2, THE DDO HALVES, ETC.) WHICH YOU WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE VERY HAPPY WITH YOURSELF IF YOU PASSED UP.
5. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH MONEY, GO THROUGHT PENNIES OR NICKELS. SOME OF MY MOST EXPENSIVE COINS ( THE TWO DOUBLE EARS) CAME FROM PENNIES, AND BUFFALOS, WARTIMES, AND EARLY JEFFERSONS ARE NOT HARD TO FIND IN NICKELS.
6. VOTE ON MY GUIDE!!!!!
7. DON'T GIVE UP YOUR FIRST TRY!!!
That's about it as far as rolls go. Dont be afraid to click on my profile and ask me a question.
PLEASE VOTE IF THIS GUIDE WAS HELPFUL!!!!!!
