SCAMS - They are everywhere in EBAY Motors

SCAM Artists rely on people's sense of GREED. Imagine - you are looking for a 1970-1971 Dodge Challenger with a HEMI - and you come across a beauty, with a Buy-it-Now price that is way too low (say $6,000.00). You can't believe this price because as you continue looking through EBay Motors - you find a dozen other non-HEMI Challengers in the $15,000-$45,000 range. So you go ahead and bid. The seller (who is often never the owner of the car - but some loyal friend or family member doing a great favor of selling the car for him (sarcasm)) contacts you and lays down the deal - which goes something like this.

Hello and thank you for contacting me. I will tell you a few words about in my car listed on ebay. It is in imaculate condition and has no scratches on and hasn't been involved in any accident. It looks just like in the pics. The title is clear. The car belonged to my brother. He died two weeks ago in a bike accident. The car is now in London, UK as my brother lived here. I am now here as i took care of the funerals. Because i can't carry all his things back i am selling them. I want to sell the car asap so I am willing to pay the shipping fees no matter of the destination. The total price i hope to sell this car is $5200. I will request a 2,500 deposit with balance upon delivery I know that the price is low but i have no use for the car and I want to get back home as soon as i sell it. I want to end this deal through ebay third party payment it's a third party service similar to escrow.com - they hold the funds until you receive the car. If you want to continue , please email your full name and address for shipping purposes so we can get on with it . I am looking forward to hearing from you and to completing this deal. I wait your further questions and i will provide any infos you need. Thank you

Regards!

Take Note: Hear are some of the clear signs this is a SCAM

-Deal is too good to be true (priced thousands less then going rate)

-Car is in better than excellent condition.

-The seller is often not the owner 鈥?this way 鈥?he doesn鈥檛 have to answer all of the detailed questions. He can plead ignorance.

-There is often a reason to why the car is being sold 鈥?such as a death in the family, or 鈥?I live in London and have no use for a car with the steering wheel on the left. (that was funny the first time I heard it!)

-The Car is overseas - WARNING. The current SCAM rage is to be in London. If someone in London is trying to sell you a car 鈥?RUN AWAY!

-Their email spelling and grammar is poor (did you see all of the errors?)

-The seller often changes the deal 鈥?such as 鈥?throws in the delivery charges free 鈥?which is hilarious if you stop and think about it. You are going to sell a car and in order to do so 鈥?you must throw in shipping to the USA from London at no extra cost? Hello? I think there are MOPAR and Hemi fans in London.

-The seller explains the money transfer process 鈥?and refers to EBay or Safe Harbour or Escrow.com as often as possible 鈥?but also twists the truths which the unsuspecting Ebayer may not know. (More on this later).

-The seller makes mistakes 鈥?such as changes the price 鈥?and often changes the price in your favor.

Other SIGNs of a SCAMMER

-As soon as you start a dialogue with the seller, the car is suddenly pulled from Ebay. If this happens 鈥?run away!!!

-The seller wants your information ASAP, such as your name and sometimes even your EBAY ID. Never give him your personal data.

-The seller says EBAY will hold the money for you! This is wrong. Ebay NEVER holds the money during a transaction.

-Never send the money by Western Union or Money-Gram or other wire service. If those are the rules 鈥?then run away!

-The seller says he wants half of the money up front, and the other half upon delivery 鈥?AND 鈥?you can be feel safe because Ebay is holding the money.

- If you send half of the money, the money is lost 鈥?and that is the SCAM.

-Start hitting them with questions. And when you catch them in a lie or if their story changes 鈥?beware. I try to get them to tell me where the car is, and then I make up a story like I will be there (on company business) in 3 days to inspect the car. And if the story starts changing 鈥?beware.

BEWARE OF EBAY 2nd CHANCE OFFERS! I am writing another Guide on this topic - but 2nd Chance Offers are also full of SCAMMERS!

Important Notes from EBay Safe Harbour Team:-Always use caution when purchasing high-priced items, especially if the price seems too good to be true.

-Do not use instant cash wire transfer services such as Western Union and MoneyGram when paying someone you don't know and decline sending payment in cases where these are the only methods of payment offered by the seller.

- Generally, if payment is sent using an instant cash wire transfer service and the item is not delivered as promised, no recourse is available for recovering funds. If you use these methods of payment, you are not covered by the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program, and you'll have little or no remedy for transaction problems.

My final thoughts:

-Do not buy any car without you (yourself) inspecting the car or hire to have it inspected.-Never buy a car from outside the USA. There are customs fees and taxes and other paperwork that really aren鈥檛 worth the hassle.-Utilize the EBay team, and Ebay Toolbar, and other tools (like verifying email through Ebay in the My Messages section).
