Ladies and Gents welcome to my guide on how to spot a fake Gucci"Horsebit Hobo"
1st things first, Gucci didn't name this bag the "Horsebit Hobo" nor did they name it the "Jessica Simpson bag". This bag is called the Gucci "Chain" Bag. I know you're probably thinking their are so many listings with the name Gucci Horsebit Hobo. The horsebit is the detailing of the bag. A person who actually bought this bag from Gucci, Neiman's, Saks, or Bordoff's will know the actual name of this bag.
Right now, you're probably new to Ebay and you can't wait to see what you can get for under a hundred dollars. Understand this, if you want a real/genuine/authentic Gucci bag be willing to spend money. If you see a Gucci "Chain" Bag buy it now listing for under two hundred dollars RUN FOR THE HILLS! it's not real, someone in China probably is selling the bag and they have a million of them in their basement. Now some sellers probably would like to make the bidding process a little fun to see how much money they can get, some will start the bidding price at 1.00 this is ok, if they have a reserve price. Folks remember that the "Chain" Bag costs $1290.00 tax in stores. Think about it!
Next lets discuss pictures: Pictures are very important in the Ebay community especially if you're trying to buy an expensive Gucci bag! If you come across a listing with a stock photo, drawn photos of a Gucci Bag, or no photos at all and the seller refuses to send you the actual photo's DON'T BID ON IT! Here's the trick, some Ebayers/Sellers will try and sell you a bag with someone elses photo's and do the old switcharoo, this means you'll see a great looking authentic bag, but you'll get the stuff made in China. Also, beware of the one photo that looks authentic, but when you study the other photos the bag looks fake or they don't match, if you see this DON'T BID this means that they've stolen the photos from other sellers.(always ask for more photos).
Now let's talk about the photos that they do send you or the photos that's listed and what to look for, I got tired of sellers taking my hard earned dollars, so I've decided to buy an authentic Gucci Chain bag myself to do a comparison, now I know the difference.
First thing is, go to Gucci.com and click on the link classic bags you'll see the "Chain" bag and a big difference. If that's not good enough, go to the nearest Gucci, Saks or Neiman's store in your area! they'll be happy to let you stand there in their presence to study one of their bags. Once you've studied the bag, you'll see the big difference in the crap that some of the sellers have to offer. First thing you'll notice is where the hardware is located, there's no room for the "horsebit" to move the horsebit sits firmly in place and wont budge! This part of the bag should sit on your shoulder without anything moving, but your hips. The bags on Ebay you're able to just look at the picture and see where the hardware is located and there's tons of room, if you see this don't bid** it's fake**
the picture to the left is a fake bag....the picture to your right is the real thing! do you see the difference?
2. Next thing is read the description: if you're interested in a black Gucci Chain Bag here's the difference in the real thing and the fake thing! The real thing is if the seller mentions to you that the hardware on the canvas Black Gucci Bag is Nickel Plated silver, its real. Gucci doesn't come with light gold hardware on the canvas black bags unless its has the zebra print hardware. Ok I think I've lost you, so lets back track! Gucci, as creative as they are, have come up with many different Chain bags. I have a Gucci Chain zebra print on the Horsebit bag! this bag comes with light gold hardware, but note ***it's impossible to duplicate it***. Also note that the leather chain bags come with light gold hardware.
******Next Example*******
Ok look at this bag, this bag is so fake that the seller couldn't even get the bag to sit upright and also the horsebit screw is missing, authentic bags hardware won't come apart, plus look where the hardware (big circles) are, do you see all of the space in between, that shouldn't exist, I know you're probably looking at the picture and saying to yourself what the h*ll? I know I did and whats so bad about it people were bidding on it. What a shame!
3. Next thing to look for is: No and I mean absolutely none of the Chain bags come with a hidden magnetic closure, so that the bag can fold over and stay. This is something you'll read in maybe like 95% of the listings for the chain bag. Don't bid on it. if they don't specify it in the description look at the picture. If they're bold enough to show a picture of the inside of the bag look at the top, if you see something round in the bag maybe like a few inches from the tag it's a hidden magnet, NOT REAL! the authentic bags don't need a magnet they fold over nicely no matter how much stuff you have it in.
Do you see that dot in the middle of the bag where the leather is located? That's a hidden magnet, when you see this don't bid on it! Please don't ask why the fake bags have this magnetic thingy on it and the real bags don't.
4. If the seller is nice and competitive enough to show more than 3 pictures check out the bottom of the bag, if the picture of the bag has a stitch going straight down in the middle and the GG's are neatly together it's real! if there's no stitch, DONT BID! moving on!
this is real see the stitch?
5. Let's talk about the leather that the cloth Gucci Chain's have to offer. The leather on the Gucci Chain bag has exquisite leather from Italy. Some of the bags leather has long cracks on it and some actually have short cracks. Not that tough leather maybe not even leather on the FUGAZEE's (fakes) Go back to the first pictures and that should help you.
6. Please take note that Gucci bags will not come with protective plastic wrapped around the handles, however they will come with a protective film on the horsebit with a bunch of GG's on them, but if you see a picture on Ebay with the handles wrapped and the seller "claims it's new" keep it movin! Also, you may see a tag hanging from a bag like a green and white Gucci tag, remember that Gucci, Coach, Louis Vuitton or any expensive bag will not have tags hanging from it. The only tag you'll see is the price tag tucked inside of the bag. So, in other words DON'T BID! check out the picture
This is quite tricky the contrallato card in all black is a fake if you see this and a seller claims that the bag is real don't bid, but an authentic Gucci bag will come with the brown and white book and the stuff you're not supposed to eat (smile)
7. Lets talk serial numbers and tags! This is very important as well, if you see a picture of a Gucci bag with serial numbers 114900 and underneath it has 213317or 000926 it's real, but if you the numbers extremely huge then sorry the bag is fake. look at examples below.
fake! fake real tags
8. Oh yeah, I don't want to forget to mention how some sellers will make you feel intimidated when you read their listings and it says "please don't send me emails questioning authenticity because the bag is authentic" ok, answer this question for me,how are (you) the customer supposed to know if the bag is authentic if you don't ask? Especially if you don't know? Yes, the emails can be overwhelming, but you're trying to sell a product, I think I should be able to ask you any question that I want. But Ladies and Gents honestly if I do see a bag that I like and the seller says that, I won't bid. In my eyes you're not Ebay friendly. (smile)
9. PINK GUCCI CHAIN BAGS-- If you have about $25,000 to spend on a Pink Gucci Chain bag, yup I said it and no I didn't make a mistake in the zeros and your eyes aren't deceiving you, I said $25,000 on the Pink Gucci Bag then by all means buy it, but if you see one here on Ebay for less than that don't waste your time. ITS FAKE!!! Gucci does not make the pink bags anymore and yes that's how much they cost.
10. Now this is the last, but not least! Again if you're dealing with a good seller that doesn't play around when it comes to their listings, money etc...they'll be more than happy to show you the inside and out of a Gucci bag! this one is my favorite! if it's a real Gucci Chain Bag they'll show you the inside of the zipper, on the back of the zipper is stamped GUCCI! now if a seller doesn't show you that it's not that the bag is fake its because they may not know about that. Ask the seller to show you that, if they don't agree then you've guessed it! it's fake and don't bid on it.
Zipper stamp
Please understand I'm not here to take away your Ebay experience of buying a Gucci bag, but know the facts. The sellers on here have more clever ways to trick you just to get your hundreds even thousands of hard earned dollars. My goal is to educate you to the best of my knowledge so that you don't get tricked or fooled. I also want sellers to read this so that they know that you're armed with knowledge and wont fall for the garbage. oh yeah, please don't believe that you'll get all of your money back from paypal if you've been tricked, don't get me wrong Paypal will help you, but you'll have to make sure that you're on point with them and why go through all of that if you know what you're doing! be careful and be smart. Trust me you're not the only one that's reading this guide, sellers are reading it as well and I don't mind giving you the facts!!!! If you feel that this guide has helped you feel free to click the tab below to let ebayers like yourself be schooled! Chao!
************************************update************************************
On Monday, Nov 19th I received a beautiful Gucci"Chain bag from a seller here on Ebay. Now here's the deal, I always and I mean always take my bags to Gucci that I buy from off of Ebay to verify authenticity. I may have a guide to help you, but I don't work for Gucci and the staff should really know their own bags (maybe). Back to the story, I walked in with the bag and asked for a manager as you should do when verifing authenticity, when the manager approached me, I asked her if she could provide her expertise on the bag, so as I watched her go through the process of feeling for magnets, pulling the bag for the shape, sitting the bag upright to see how the bag sits, looking for the seam at the bottom she came out and said that I can breath easily that the bag of course was authentic, because she remembered that specific color when it came out a few years ago, but as I continued to watch her she didn't look for the zipper stamp, do you know why? because she didn't know about it. That's right she didn't know! When I showed it to her she actually grabbed another bag from off the shelf to see if I was correct and of course it was there. She also mentioned how a lot of Ebay buyers will come in to verify their bags and sometimes they (Gucci managers) can't tell the difference from the real ones and fake ones, that goes to show you that the bags Made In China are getting a little more believable. The manager also gave me an example of what has happened recently when a woman came in to get her purse fixed and the manager followed proper protocol by sending to the manufactuer and (they)The company sent the bag back along with a letter stating that they only fix authentic Gucci bags and not replicas. WOW
This is my warning to you, be very careful of buying bags here on Ebay, if you really want a true Gucci bag go to the store. GOODLUCK!
