Cellulite: What Works and Doesn't Work

To understand the causes of cellulite try this simple experiment. Stand in front of a well lighted mirror with your entire abdomen exposed. Place your hands firm and flat against your abdomen on either side of your belly button. Press in and then up. What you should see now is cellulite on your abdomen above where you are applying the pressure. Now imagine someone with MD or PhD after their name standing beside you and telling you "for $100.00 I've got a lotion or herbal supplement that'll solve that little problem for you". What I'd say at this point to the MD or PhD is "I've got a better idea, Doc". Then I'd let go the pressure I'm putting on the skin and fat tissues of my abdomen. Problem solved. Free. Here's another way to look at it. We don't get cellulite on our foreheads. Two reasons for this. We don't accumulate much fat on our foreheads and there isn't much upper body weight pressing down on what little fat accumulates there. Our thighs are a different story. We all know that women have a tendency to accumulate fat on the thighs. The weight of the buttocks above the back of the thighs puts pressure on all the fat tissue, causing the appearance of cellulite. Try another experiment. If your able to twist around view your posterior thighs and buttocks in a well lighted mirror. Place your hands flat against the skin of your upper buttocks and press in and pull up. See the reduction in the appearance of that cellulite? Reducing the pressure of upper body weight on fat tissue reduces cellulite. This all points to a couple of options for effective treatment of cellulite - diet and exercise. Reduce your body weight and you'll reduce the pressure of weight against fat deposits. Reduce the fat deposits by losing weight. Firm, strong muscles will resist gravity's pull against your body. For instance, walking a mile a day, a few times per week will quickly tighten up and strengthen thigh and gluteal muscles. The firm strong muscles will pull the tissues surrounding them up, lessening the pressure above the fat tissue, and reducing the appearance of cellulite. Women have a tendency to accumulate fat in the abdominal area. We also have the weight of breasts pressing down on our abdomens, dimpling the skin and fat tissue beneath. The answer? You might want to think twice about breast implants. Maintaining the ideal body weight recommended for your height, plus stengthening the muscles that support breasts and abdominal tissue is a good start. Regular exercise such as a brisk walk a few times a week will help a whole lot. I'd love to be able to offer a quick fix, or a miracle cure for cellulite, but the truth is there just isn't one. That said, improving circulation to your skin and the underlying tissues will almost always improve your skin. An item I use to exfoliate and improve circulation is the Spin Spa, which uses a spinning brush head and can be used on thighs, abdomen and buttocks in the shower. I think this item would be more effective if the brush rotated a bit faster but its the best I've been able to find so far.
